Dallas County baseball gets first win of season

The Dallas County Hornet baseball team got their first win in 2024 with an 11-2 victory over Wilcox Central on Feb. 25.

They also fell to West Blocton 15-0 on Friday and Verbena 11-7 on Monday. The Hornets (1-2) will host Isabella on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Thomasville on Tuesday, March 11 at 4 p.m.

Devin Woods, Tucker Friday and Charles Humphrey’s accounted for two hits each to lead the Hornets last week.

Woods had a double and a triple with three RBIs. Humphreyes and Friday also scored a run.

Joshua Davis also had an RBI-double while Devin Sharpe added a hit, three walks and three runs scored.

The Hornets also had 10 walks in addition to their eight hits. Davis also reached on a hit-by-pitch.

Woods got the win in five innings of work. He had seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run on one hit and six walks.

Dallas County 0, West Blocton 15

Crystan McCune was the only base-runner for the Hornets, capturing a walk. No batter had a hit for Dallas County. They also committed three errors on defense.

McCune took the loss in one and one-third innings of work.

Dallas County 7, Verbena 11

The Hornets only had two hits, but they were able to score seven runs. However, it wasn’t enough.

Dallas County fell behind 11-2 before they scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning, but that was all they could muster as the Red Devils survived the surge.

Joshua Davis and Kelvin Furlow both had RBI singles for the only hits.

However, the Hornets drew 15 walks, led by Crystan McCune’s three walks and two runs scored. Davis, Gavin Curtis, Tucker Friday and Devin Woods also earned a pair of walks. Patrick Rudolph also had an RBI.

Woods took the loss in four and two-thirds innings of work despite having six strikeouts. While he allowed 10 runs on nine hits and two walks, three Hornet errors cause seven unearned runs.

Charles Humphreyes pitched third of an inning allowing a run on four walks. Devin Sharpe had a scoreless inning despite three walks.
