On Wednesday, The Selma Housing Authority alongside the UAB Live Health Smart Alabama organization kicked off their Selma pop-up wellness clinic to give residents a chance to learn more about their health and discuss the options available for preventative care.
Both organizations operated under one roof at the Rangedale Community Center from noon until 4 p.m. Wednesday and on Thursday, they set up the clinic within the Felix Heights community from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to bring comprehensive health screenings to the public at no cost.
Residents of the Rangedale community alongside members of the Felix Heights community who attended the wellness clinic were able to sign in and go around to different tables, speak to health professionals once their names were called, had the opportunity to understand and get to know their height, weight, and their BMI known as their body mass index including their numbers pertaining to their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol including their glucose levels.
“Then, we educate them on the next steps to help, not just with preventative care but for those who have chronic, daily struggles with their health,” said Thamar Taylor, Community Engagement Coordinator for the UAB Live Health Smart Alabama organization. So, there’s other parts to our wellness, where we encourage physical activity as well as education. So, with this wellness clinic, we pull up to different parts of the neighborhood, especially in East Selma where there are housing communities, so that individuals know we are here and that they don’t have to drive far to see us.”
The clinic also addressed any other health risks that those in attendance could potentially have once being seen and Taylor said the event was catered to all members of the community that lives within Dallas County.
“It doesn’t matter what your income status is, where you live within the Selma community,” Taylor said. But, we just try to go into areas where we know individuals may not have proper transportation, to and from appointments.”
Taylor said those who took advantage of the clinic and were seen could also get referred to UAB family medicine in Selma, Doc on the Spot for those interested in having a virtual doctor within minutes can take advantage of the program through the Edmundite Missions or the Rural Health Medical Center.
Taylor said their primary goal through the partnership with The Selma Housing Authority is to just try to pinpoint individuals in all those different directions if or when they may need further care after citizens leave them.
