The Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF), the Selma Housing Authority, Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) and City of Selma have partnered to give away a newly constructed home to one family enrolled in the BBCF Head Start program serving Dallas County.

A total of 25 eligible families who qualified by demonstrating financial hardship and lack of access to stable housing applied directly to BBCF for entry into a drawing for the free house giveaway. This drawing will occur publicly on Friday, Feb. 28, in Selma at 10 a.m. at 1425 Washington Street.

Selma Housing Authority President/CEO Kennard Randolph, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors for BBCF stated, said he is excited to see another life being changed this week.

“On Friday, we are overjoyed to celebrate not just a change of address, but a new beginning filled with hope and opportunity,” Randolph said. “Every family deserves a place they can call home, and together, we are making that dream a reality.”

Felecia Lucky, CEO & President, Black Belt Community Foundation, said they believe that every child and their family deserve a safe, stable home to grow and thrive.

“This home giveaway is more than just a house—it’s a foundation for hope, opportunity and a brighter future,” Lucky said. “Through our game-changing and life-changing partnership with the Selma Housing Authority, we are honored to support a Head Start family in overcoming financial hardship and gaining the housing stability they deserve. We look forward to celebrating this life-changing moment on February 28th and uplifting our community together.”

This marks the partnership’s second home giveaway in Selma, following the highly publicized 2024 gift of a home to Tamicka Newberry and her family, who lost their housing in the wake of a January 2023 EF-2 tornado. That initiative highlighted the urgent need for safe, affordable, and storm-resistant housing in the region and reinforced BBCF’s ongoing mission to strengthen families and communities.

Community members are encouraged to arrive ahead of the 10 a.m. drawing. Food truck service and an on-site DJ will add to the festive nature of this public event.

Remarks to those gathered and the press will include the winning family of the house giveaway, Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., BBCF CEO & President Felecia Lucky, SHA President and Randolph, Dr. Taquila Monroe, BBCF Head Start Director and President of the Alabama Head Start Association, and Bruce Marks, CEO of NACA, Congresswoman Terri Sewell’s office and other community and government officials.
