Construction workers began one of the City of Selma’s infrastructure projects on Water Avenue on Thursday that will repave 70 blocks of the city.

This project, funded by $2.4 million in grants from the Delta Regional Authority (DRA), involves street resurfacing and drainage improvements to address longstanding infrastructure challenges across over 70 blocks.

Mitchell’s Construction Company based out of Catherine began milling work on Thursday despite frigid conditions, causing all of Water Avenue to be closed from ArtsRevive to Broad Street Friday. Water Avenue was closed from Broad Street to Washington Street Thursday and remained closed on Friday.

Workers anticipate that they will be able to begin repaving these areas next week. The initial phase is to repave Water Avenue from Church Street to Franklin Street. Other roads included in this initial phase include portions from Water Avenue to Dallas Avenue on Church Street, Lauderdale Street and Washington Street.

A press conference was held on Friday, Jan. 31, at the corner of Water Avenue and Washington Street for local officials to provide details on the project.

“The Delta Regional Authority’s support for street resurfacing and drainage improvements will uplift our community and ensure safer, more resilient neighborhoods,” Sewell said last month.
