Morgan Academy softball opens season with come-from-behind win

The Morgan Academy Lady Senators softball team opened the season with a dramatic rally to defeat Southern Academy 7-6 on Tuesday.
Southern Academy led 6-0 after three innings, but the Senators scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in each of the fifth and six innings to get the lead.
Lydia Smitherman got the Lady Senators on the board with a sacrifice ground out to score Anna Logan Lee. Back-to-back RBI singles by Cassidy Peal and Addison Bond allowed Leila Moore and Kenzie Oates to score to round out the fourth inning.
After a scoreless at bat by Southern, Bond doubled to center field to put pressure on the defense. An error by the fielder allowed Hadley Verhoff to score. Lee hit another double to score Bond to round out the top of the fifth inning.
Then in the top of the sixth inning, Verhoff had a two-out double to score Peal and Kaylee Cornell to give Morgan Academy the lead.
Then Bond closed out the game in the circle. She pitched four and one-third innings of scoreless softball allowing one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
E.G. Mims started the game allowing six runs, only five earned, on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Peal led the way with a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored and an RBI. Verhoff had two RBIs on her hit. Lee and Smitherman had the other RBIs.
Players getting hits for the Senators included Verhoff, Brynlee Chappelle, Bond, Lee, Leila Moore, Smitherman and Bond.
The Lady Senators return to action on Saturday non the Sparta Tournament.
