Since January, Selma High School has carried out their Saturday school program, giving kids the opportunity to learn on the weekend.

The program helps any child or teenager of the school or surrounding schools to have the opportunity to receive one on one services for any skill that they may have questions about or need further explanation on aside from the traditional class time, according to Kesia Smith, who is the principal of Selma High School.

Smith said early January, that she was very excited that both parents and students have embraced the idea of attending school on a Saturday and that they have an average of 50 students to take advantage of the program so far.

“When students and teachers commit to teaching and learning on their day off, it tells me that they are serious about learning and willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead,” Smith said.

Smith also told Selma Times Journal Reporter Faith Callens that their 11th graders will also be taking the ACT, March 11th, which is their state accountability test, where they will be focusing on teaching ACT skills within the weekend day program as well.

“I also have a few students that are taking classes to help recover a credit, so a space is also provided for them to work as well,” Smith said.

Smith said she has ordered the Kaplan online ACT practice from Act.org for students who are preparing for the test and she said, what they are teaching is exactly aligned with what students will see on test day in March.
