Second quarter shutout paces Selma against Holtville to clinch regionals

The Selma girls basketball team built a big halftime lead against Holtville and cruised to a 47-16 win at home the Class 5A Central Subregionals Friday night.

The Lady Saints (20-3) now advance to the Class 5A Central regional where they will face Briarwood Christian (20-11), who defeated Valley 57-45.

Jy’Kierra Oliver scored six of Selma’s eight points in the first quarter to give Selma an 8-3 lead. The Lady Saints pitched a shutout in the second quarter with a 20-0 advantage over the Lady Bulldogs. Selma led 28-3 at half-time.

The teams to played to an 8-8 tie in the third quarter as Selma led 36-11 headed to the final quarter. The Lady Saints outpaced Holtville 11-5 down the stretch to clinch the win.

Rod’Neshia Parker hit a quartet of 3-pointers to lead Selma with 21 points, nine steals, four rebounds and three assists. Safiya White had 10 points and seven rebounds while Oliver finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks. McKenzie Carter added six points, seven steals and four rebounds. Nicole Holloway had two points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Tickets for the regional are $12 per day. The game will be streamed on the NFHS Network.
