Selma falls to Montevallo in boys area championship

The Selma Saints came up short in the Class 5A, Area 5 boys area basketball championship Wednesday night, as the visiting Montevallo Bulldogs escaped with a 57-50 win.

The loss snapped a 20-game winning streak for Selma and dropped their overall record to 20-3 overall. Montevallo improved to 19-13 overall. Selma will be on the road for the sub-regional round while Montevallo earned the right to host sub-regionals.

Montevallo opened the game on an 6-0 run forcing a timeout by Selma. The Saints responded with a 7-2 run to end the quarter, leaving the Bulldogs with an 11-9 lead.

Selma continued the advantage with another 10 straight points to lead 19-11, but Montevallo came back and cut the lead to 24-22 at halftime.

The Bulldogs came out in the third quarter and controlled the pace while outscoring Selma 17-9 to take a 38-33.

Selma hit back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 38-38 with just under seven minutes to play.

Montevallo scored six of the next eight points including a dunk to take a 44-40 lead with 4:20 to play.

After the Saints cut the lead to one, Montevallo stretched the lead back to 51-43 on a 7-0 run.

The Bulldogs then made their free throws down the stretch, making 17 of 23 attempts from the line for the game. They were led by Nahjear Russell with 20 points including a 10-for-12 at the foul line. Tournament MVP Dee Cutts added 13 points followed by Ke’Erin Ross with 10, Demeco Gibson with eight and Keiston Ross and Derrick Richburh with three points each.

Selma was led by Tristin Blocton with 17 points. He also reached 1,250 career points during the game. DeShawn Flannigan added 10 points followed by LaDarian Brown with nine, Samarion Woods with eight, Kristen Moore with four and Treyvonne Eaton with two. The Saints went 8-for-16 from the foul line.
