Around noon yesterday, members of The Selma Safe Haven Center alongside the organization’s CEO Rev. Michael Bowen had their 25th annual march starting at the Brown Chapel AME Church in Selma, commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his efforts to bring upon change.
Once the march started, oncoming traffic was stopped including the traffic behind the marchers that screamed out,” No Justice, No Peace” all the way until they reached the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
The mantra that the marchers screamed out was one among many that was said by the marchers in the 1965 Civil Rights Movement that including Dr. King, Rosa Parks and so many others back then.
Once the group officially got to the bridge, they convened at the Songs of Selma Park, where they had a ceremony dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his efforts to end segregation among all groups and nationalities of people.
Then, around 1 p.m. yesterday, community members convened at the Selma City Hall to once again discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but this time to watch as the city hang a green, yellow and white wreath in front of the doors of city hall in honor of his legacy.
Due to inclement weather, the city decided to have an inside ceremony dedicated to the civil rights leader and present the wreath in front of the city and community members instead.
The wreath was given to the city on the behalf of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. as a gift of acknowledgment and dedication to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The wreath will sit in the city hall’s entrance, for those who come in to be reminded of what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said and has done for the future as we know it.
