Honor walk for AIDS patients, victims set for Friday

Selma will take time to commemorate those who have succumbed to HIV infection along with showing support to those living with the virus this week.

While World AIDS Day is universally celebrated on Dec. 1, Selma AIR’s Blackbelt Wellness Center of Selma is hosting an event honoring that day on Friday, Dec. 6.

The event titled Honor Walk: Remember, Thrive and Survive will take place at 11 a.m. at the St. James Hotel Courtyard and Park.

Shawana Bell, education specialist of Selma AIR’s Blackbelt Wellness Center of Selma, said they are here to help the community.

“Our purpose for this event is to commemorate those individuals who succumb to HIV as well as to show support to individuals who are living with the virus,” Bells said. “Our desire is to publicize our support and assistance to needed individuals and to educate our community about the virus. We are here to help our community.”

Bell said Selma AIR’s Blackbelt Wellness Center offers PReP and HIV education, testing, support and resources to the Black Belt Community.

There will be two events. The Honor Walk will go toward the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The speaker will be Larry Cowan, New Executive Director for Selma.

Then the A.I.R Party In The Park will follow at the St. James Courtyard and Park. Families can receive onsite resources including HIV and syphilis testing, diabetes screening,nutrition information, HIV prevention information. There will also be Food, door prizes, music and more.
