Former Selma High standout Dion Nelson Jr. is excited to resume his college football career at Alabama A&M.
Nelson will make his Alabama A&M debut on August 31 when the Bulldogs visit Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Nelson is battling for a starting role and playing time with the Bulldogs. Nelson’s former Selma High teammate, Jeremiah Wright, is battling for a starting offensive guard position with the Tigers.
Nelson, a fourth-year junior, transferred from Tennessee-Martin in January. Nelson contributed during the spring, catching a game-tying touchdown pass in the Maroon and White spring football game. The Maroon won 28-21 in overtime.
“I’m coming back for what’s mine,” Nelson said. “The run we’re about to go on, we’re going to put the whole county on a map.”
Nelson was an all-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) tight end with the Skyhawks last season. Nelson had 12 receptions for 134 yards and four touchdowns for the Skyhawks. In 2022, Nelson earned OVC honors with 21 receptions for 267 yards and six touchdowns. He led all OVC tight ends in both receiving yards and touchdowns.
