The Selma City Council voted to enter negotiations with the Selma City Schools over the  SCS possibly purchasing Bloch Park and Memorial Stadium.

The city council unanimously approved at a Special Called Meeting on Wednesday.

Council members present at the meeting and who voted were: City Council President Billy Young, Atkin Jemison, Michael Johnson, Christie Thomas, Lesia James, Clay Carmichael, Jannie Thomas and Troy Harvill.

SCS Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd sent a letter to the City of Selma, which the city council and Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. discussed.

Perkins said that there’s no time to waste because football season starts in August.“It’s a sense of urgency, it could be a lengthy process,” Perkins said.  “Selma is trying to save its football season.”

Young said its the beginning of a negotiation process, with several steps involve, including a public hearing and appraisals.

A committee was formed and  Young will be the Chairperson.  Council members Jannie Thomas, Jemison, Harvill, Perkins, City Treasurer Terri Barnes-Smith, Public Building Director Henry Hicks, Parks and Recreation Director Dr. Denisha Hendricks, and Attorneys for Mayor and city Council will be on the committee.

Perkins said he disagreed with the silence of his Administration’s voice during this process.
