Former Times-Journal writer headed into Alabama Writers Hall of Fame

Kathryn Tucker Windham, a former Selma Times-Journal reporter, will be inducted into the 2023 Alabama Writers Hall of Fame on Friday.

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center.

Windham, who died on June 12, 2011 in Selma, was known as a journalist, photographer, folklorist, author, storyteller, actor and national radio commentator.

Windham wrote for the Selma Times-Journal between 1956 and 1973. She also reported for The Birmingham News.

“She served admirably in a number of roles there as a reporter, as a city editor and in other capacities,” former Times-Journal editor Jamie Wallace said in 2011.

As an author, Windham wrote Treasured Alabama Recipes, three other cookbooks, ghost stories including: Thirteen Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey, which she co-wrote with Margaret Gillis Figh.

Windham and her husband, Amassa Benjamin Windham had three children: Kathryn (Kitti) Tabb Windham, Amasa Benjamin Windham Jr. and Helen Ann (Dilcy) Windham Hilley.

Windham also served as the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce director for 17 years.
