Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta celebrated Founders Day

The Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrated its 110th Founders Day and the 70th Chartering Anniversary last weekend.

Elsie Cooke-Holmes, Delta Sigma Theta National President and Chair of the Board of Directors, was the guest speaker.

In her speech, Cooke-Holmes, discussed the historical founding of the sorority on the campus of Howard University, on January 13, 1913, by 22 courageous women dedicated to public service.

Cooke-Holmes also highlighted the chartering of the Selma Chapter on November 13, 1953, at the home of Charter Member Margaret Jones Moore.  She praised the Selma Alumnae for 70 years of outstanding service to the local community and beyond, challenging the women to remain an ‘agent of change’ for the community and the world. 

Cooke-Holmes was honored by local officials at the event. Congresswoman Terri Sewell sent -Proclamation; for the event and  Selma Mayor James Perkins gave Cooke-Holmes a key to the City.

State Senator Rob Stewart, Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and State Rep. Prince Chestnut attended the event.

Cooke-Holmes and SAC President Eris Brooks Beasley presented longevity awards:  Dorothy Brown and Mary Dover-50 Year certificates; Beverly Blackmon, Tara Burks, Cynthia Hogue, Shanequa Brown and Tanya Thomas-25 Year certificates.

SAC Co-Chairs Pamela Jackson and Yeteva Johnson released a joint statement on Founder’s Day, saying: “It was a festive, fruitful afternoon interspersed with commendable comments and forward-thinking challenges that fulfilled the expectations of the occasion.”
