Selma High’s FBLA group earns service season award

Selma High School’s Future Business Leaders of America recently received the 2023 Champion Chapter Service Season Award.
The service season is one of four series of challenges that chapters may complete for national recognition. By completing activities, chapters accrue points. Completing activities across four sections will result in Champion Chapter recognition, with a banner for the adviser’s classroom/meeting space or school award case.
Additional incentives such as ribbons at conferences, national recognition in publications, and plaques are available. Selma City Schools Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd gave his praise for FBLA after receiving the award.
“We are extremely proud of our outstanding scholars and their sponsors for achieving such an honor as being awarded the 2023 Champion Chapter Service Season Award,” Byrd said. “They have worked extremely hard all year long and that hard work, dedication, and commitment was recognized. They have made all of us extremely proud and thankful!”
This is the third award that Selma High has received in 2022. They also received the Summer Starter and Shaping Success Season Awards. FBLA advisor Patricia Farrior said the Chapter hopes to get the CTE award to complete the series.
If they are able to get the CTE award the chapter will receive the Outstanding Chapter Award for the sixth consecutive year. The chapter did several projects to earn the Champion Chapter Service Season Award. One was a can food drive that the FBLA hosted. The food was given to the ROTC, who gave it to the local food bank.
Farrior said that FBLA does a lot for the students not only as scholars but as people.
“A lot of those activities are teaching kids business skills,” Farrior said. “Things like creating budgets, recruiting members, pulling together activities where they will bond themselves to become a better chapter, promoting leadership, we teach them how to conduct meetings, dress for success, all of those type things.”
