DCHS has started a new publication at the school to help bring the news to its student body. DCHS teacher Rodney Annis advises the journalism students at the high school and since starting the idea of the publication in August of last year has put together a team of students to make the publication a reality.

“They are doing a really good job,” Annis said. “It’s kind of fun blending the academic side because I have to grade their work but give them the freedom with writing what they want to. I’m delighted with what they are doing. They are all making really good grades.”

The team is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Senior Bailey Ross is the editor of the publication and she said as the editor she has started to experience the stresses of getting a paper out each week.

“It’s a little stressful keeping up with deadlines,” Ross said. “Everything doesn’t always go as planned but once all the articles get in it all comes together. It comes together beautifully. It’s not as stressful when everything gets in.”

The school has started to see the benefit of having an in-house publication for the student body and says it’s important to support these students while they are pursuing this dream of journalism.

“Journalism teaches our students the tools needed to articulate factual and opinionated information to their community,” DCHS Principal Erika Crum said. “At DCHS the journalism class has done an excellent job with publishing monthly newspapers this school year. We are so proud of them.”
