Broad Street Books will be hosting a Poetry event next weekend.

On September 25 at 5 p.m., Alabama’s past poet laureate, Jennifer Horne will read from and sign copies of Borrowed Light, her recently published poetry collection.

She will also share poems from Root & Plant & Bloom, a collection written by her late mother, Dodie Walton Horne, and compiled by Ms. Horne and her sister, Mary Horne. Both books will be on sale at the event.

Horne will be introduced by Dr. Don Noble, host of Alabama Public Television’s “Bookmark” series since 1988.

“Thanks to my mother,” Horne said. “I was introduced to poetry at an early age, as a form of creative expression, solace, and joy. I’m so pleased to have the chance, for the very first time, to do a reading of my work and my mother’s together, letting the poems be in conversation with one another. I love reading poems aloud and engaging with an audience, and I am very much looking forward to being in Selma for this event.”

Horne served as the 12th Poet Laureate of Alabama from 2017-2021. Raised in Arkansas and a longtime Alabama resident, she is a writer and editor of acclaimed prose, poetry, and fiction. Horne has been the recipient of fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Florida’s Seaside Institute and has been honored with the Druid City Literary Arts Award given by the Tuscaloosa Arts Council. “As part of its mission, Broad Street Books is proud to bring this level of critically recognized talent to Selma,” Broad Street Books owner David Tipmore said, “and to once again remind us of the power of poetry to excite and to heal.”
