Former Morgan Academy baseball standout Gunnar Henderson continues to progress through the minor league ranks of professional baseball, and he’s excelling in each stop along the way.

Henderson, a shortstop who was called up June 6 to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides from Double-A Bowie Baysox – both teams affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles, was assigned to the American League Futures team on Thursday, according to the latest transactions section of his player profile at  https://www.milb.com/player/gunnar-henderson-683002?stats=gamelogs-r-hitting-mlb&year=2022.

As of Thursday, Henderson has 20 hits in 84 at-bats for the Tides. He started hot when he arrived at Norfolk, going 17 of 58 for the Tides in June, including a June 28 game against the Gwinnett Stripers where he hit for the cycle in four at-bats on the eve of his 21st birthday.

“It was kind of an idea in my head,” Henderson said in an interview with CBS 3 WTKR about the accomplishment. “I think I swung a little bit too hard the first two swings and then kind of toned it down on the last one and was able to get it done so it was pretty awesome.”

While Henderson’s bat has cooled to start July (3 of 26 at the plate), his chances to showcase his potential have not dwindled.

According to MLB.com, Henderson is the fifth-ranked overall prospect and the top-ranked shortstop prospect.

The seven-inning American vs. National League game will be played at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, July 16, at 6 p.m. It will be broadcast live on Peacock and SiriusXM, with MLB Network producing the telecast and re-airing the game at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
