Selma Mayor, City Council to start new meeting procedure

The Selma City Council and the office of Mayor James Perkins Jr. will have a new process for the work session and city council meeting going forward.

The procedure was discussed at Thursday’s work session and will start at Tuesday city council meeting.

During a press conference on Memorial Day weekend, Perkins announced that he will not attend city council meetings.

At the work session, Perkins will send the Mayor’s report to the city council: President Billy Young, council members Clay Carmichael, Troy Harvill, Sam Randolph, Michael Johnson, Christie Thomas, Atkin Jemison, Jannie Thomas and Lesia James.

Young said that if the council has questions, they will be discussed at the city council meeting. He added that City Clerk Ivy Harrison will present the questions to Perkins for further discussion.

City Council members present at the work session were: Young, Carmichael, Jemison, Jannie Thomas, Christie Thomas.

In other council news:

-The city council will vote on Resolution 213-21/22 to appoint Donovan McGuire as the new City Municipal Judge.

-The city council will vote on Resolution 21t-21/22 to appoint Thomas Atchison Jr. as the new Defense Attorney.

Young said that both two-year positions, if approved, will start July 1.

The other Municipal Judge position, currently held by Brandon J. Wooten,  two-year role has expired. Wooten, who appeared at the work session, sounded optimistic his term will be renewed.  The city council will discuss at a later date.

-Young recommended Christie Thomas for a Water Board Appointment. The vote could come up at the city council meeting.

“She’s well suited for the position, has knowledge of the water system and the water works,” Young said.
