CARCAC holds annual Pinwheel Garden planting

Central Alabama Regional Child Advocacy Center held its traditional Pinwheel Garden plantings on Tuesday afternoon.

Each year, the event honors child abuse victims and raise awareness in its service region, Bibb County, Dallas County, Hale County, Perry County and Wilcox County.

Each pinwheel represents a child involved in an abuse investigation during the year. April is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

CARCAC Executive Director Lauri Cothran said it’s always important to to recognize and remember children that was abused each year.

International Paper, Dallas County Commission, Bush Hog, Horizon Investment Group, Selma Funeral Home and Long Lewis Foundation are all Pinwheel Sponsors. Each group had at least one representative at the ceremony.

Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum, Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson, Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, Dallas County Commissioner Jan Justice, Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford, United Way Executive Director Jeff Cothran and Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey were among the high profile officials who attended the event.

Cothran said she appreciates the local agencies that help with the event each year.

Jeff Cothran, Cothran’s husband, said the United Way and CARCAC have common Ground.

“The CARCAR means everything to the United Way,” Jeff Cothran said. “The United Way is all about helping kids that are abused.”

Jackson said the CARCAR helps the District Attorney office with children crimes in the Fourth Judicial District, the same area the organization represents.

“I am proud that the Black Belt has developed one of the top Child Advocacy Centers in the state,” Jackson said. “The partnerships have helped us successfully prosecute many child molesters and other abusers across our region.’’
