Several businesses items were discussed at the Selma City Council Work Session on Thursday at City Hall.

Some of the topics could be discussed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Present at the meeting were: City Council President Billy Young, councilmen Michael Johnson, Atkin Jemison, Troy Harvill, and councilwomen Lesia James, Christie Thomas and Jannie Thomas.

Young had 10 items on the agenda and many were about litigation and finances.

Young told City Attorney Major Madison that the council needs to see pending cases in the litigation and case status. Young set a deadline for May 9 for an update.

Young said he will speak with Mayor James Perkins Jr. to receive applications for municipal Judge and defense attorney positions, which Young said Human Resources has the applications. Perkins was not at the 90-minute work session.

City debt was also on Young’s list. Young told city treasurer Terri Barnes-Smith the council wants to  know what the city owes.

Johnson had several items on the agenda that included: update on James Perkins Jr, Park, renaming Plant Street to Terry Jackson Blvd., repairing Dinkins Pool in East Selma, closing part of Clark Avenue and reopening East Selma Baseball Park.

“James Perkins Jr. Park and renaming Plant Street came under the last Administration,” Johnson said. “I’ve talked to Dr. Denisha Hendericks and Councilman Jemison over the baseball park and the pool.”

Jannie Thomas discussed public safety in Ward 7, repairing property at 316 Woodrow Avenue and follow up for work on Cave in on LL Anderson Avenue.

James recommended a retreat for the council . James said the council needs the time to work together and improve the Queen City.
