The Omega Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is working with multiple organizations to register voters at the Bridge Crossing Jubilee this weekend.

The 57th Bridge Crossing Jubilee will be held in Selma,  starting Thursday and ends on Sunday. The Voter Registration Drive will be held Saturday and Sunday.

Through the Selma Democracy Center, the voter registration effort is part of a larger initiative created through the partnership of the Omega Psi Phi, Alabama Statewide Organization, 7th District and the Center for Common Ground.

“As the Basileus of The Omega Chi Chapter, it is truly an honor for us to lead the effort to register voters during the Selma Jubilee, following in the footsteps of our ‘Outstanding’ ancestors in their victorious demands to have the right to vote,” Omega Chi Chapter Basileus Brother Calvin Marshall said.

“We have climbed many mountains and broken through several barriers; but we must not get complacent with our endeavors and as we continue to strive for better outcomes when it comes to equal rights, despite ethnicity, class, or gender.”

At the 2020 elections, over 1 million registered voters in Alabama did not vote, with one-third being African American.

Cary G. Hale, the 18th State Representative, the Alabama Statewide Organization, an Unincorporated Entity of the 7th District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., said voting is a priority for every statewide organization and chapter. “We activated thousands of black men across our college and alumni networks to mobilize and register thousands of voters, provide transportation and work at polling locations,” Hale said.  “There’s so much more we can do this year in partnership with the Center For Common Ground to strengthen participation in our democracy before the 2022 elections.”

The Center For Common Ground, a non-partisan voting rights organization empowering underrepresented voters to fully participate in democracy, will be alongside the Omega Psi Phi chapter, encouraging people to register and vote.
