VFW Post 3016 honors law enforcement, first responders

Law Enforcement, First Responders, Teachers, students and media were honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Selma Post 3016 last weekend.

Honorees and their guest ate a delectable spread of fried chicken, corn, cole slaw, string beans and assorted deserts at the VFW Annual awards ceremony.

Dallas County Sheriff Deputy Willie Calhoun Jr. won two awards: DCSO officer of the year and top state officer.  He received two checks for a combined $350.

“Willie gets along with everyone and he has a big heart,” Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum said. “He will give you the shirt off your back.”

DSCO Chief Deputy John Hatfield and  J.T. Cole also praised Calhoun for his hard work and dedication.

Calhoun, a former Selma Police Department officer, said he enjoys working at the DCSO under Granthum and with other officers.

Justin Dixon of Burkville Volunteer Fire Department was named Firefighter of the year.

Danny Wallace of Advanced EMS Dallas County was named first responder of the year.

Morgan Academy shined at the event, with three teachers earning awards:

-Kimberly Jones  won the citizenship education award for the entire district and was teacher of the year.

-Alex Harrelson won the Voice of Democracy Award.

Four students, three from Morgan Academy, earned a VOD award.

Sophomore Anna Elizabeth Brech was first, followed by fellow Sophomore Katherine Evelyn Patterson. Junior Anna D. Haugen was tied with Meadowview Christian School freshman Kenlynn Leigh Buchanan.

-Teacher Mary Cook, received the Patriots Pen.

Three Morgan Academy eighth graders  earned Patriot Pen awards: Jordin McKenzie Bell was first, followed by Madalyn Stevens and Emma Smith.

The Selma Times-Journal received a media award for its outstanding coverage in the communities of Selma and Dallas County.

First responders, teachers and students received checks and certificates by the VFW.
