State Attorney General Steve Marshall presented a proclamation to the family of fallen Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer at a ceremony on Wednesday at Selma City Hall.

Marshall presented a plaque to Moorer’s mother, Monica Moorer, grandmother, Jessie Mae Moorer-Snow, aunt Sabrina Underwood, daughter Makenyl Campbell and nephew, Sidney Underwood.

On July 27, 2021, Moorer was killed between 3:30 and 4 a.m. during lunch break. The woman at the apartment, Shakiaria Barley, was shot in the leg.

“We lost a law enforcement hero, we lost a son, we lost a father, we lost a grandson, we lost a nephew, we lost a friend,” Marshall said.

Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford said the Selma Police Department still feels the loss of Moorer.

“Officer Moorer showed up for work with no regret, he helped others with no regret and served the city of Selma with no regret,” Fulford said.

Marshall praised Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., Selma City Council for their commitment to law enforcement in the Queen City.

“I commend the Mayor and city council for paying the police officers and I predict the residents will see those results fast,” Marshall said.

The ceremony was attended by current and former Selma Police Department officers, Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum, former Selma Police Chief John Brock, Selma City Council President Billy Young, City council members Jannie Thomas, Lesia James and Clay Carmichael.

Perkins was unable to attend and spoke via Zoom conference, thanking Marshall for attending.

“We continue to grieve with the family and we continue to make ourselves available for them,” Perkins said.

Young said the city appreciates the SPD and Dallas County Sheriff Office in their efforts keeping the area safe.

“The whole world knows that the city of Selma is standing with Marquis Moorer’s family today,” Young said. “Officer Moorer stood for Selma and he stood up for Selma.”

The ALEA’s SBI Division is handling the case, which remains under investigation. Two suspects, Javonte Stubbs and Quinton Carter, are both charged with murder in the case.
