Dallas County Family Resource Center giving away jackets

The Dallas County Family Resource Center is hosting it’s annual Coat & Blanket Drive at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Songs of Selma Park.

The event will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Dallas County Family Resource Center and Snow’s Cleaning Service are both sponsoring the event.

“We chose this location because we are hoping to serve the homeless in downtown and in Selmont,” said  Amy Carmichael of Dallas County Family Resource Center. “We use this opportunity of getting way donations to also let the homeless know about our housing services.”

Selma Center For Non-Violence, Catherine Revel Circle at Church Street United Methodist Church and Dallas County Commissioner Jan Justice are among those who have donated.

Coats/jackets, sweaters, gloves, hats will be among the items given out. Coats must be new or good condition only. Food donations are also accepted.

LeMarkus A. Snow of Snow’s Cleaning Service both said more donations are needed.

“Groundhog said six more weeks of winter so we going to need to help people out more.”

Carmichael requests that dropped off at 431 Church St. between the hours of 9  a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to  noon on Friday

Anyone who is interested in donating can call the center at 334-874-7785. Donations are tax deductible.

“We love partnering with resources in the community as we believe community teamwork is much more efficient and helpful than operating in silos,” Carmichael said.
