The Michael David Johnson Foundation held its annual Veterans Day Appreciation breakfast on Tuesday morning at the ArtsRevive.

The event was free to all veterans and their families. Everyone received a hot plate of grits, eggs, bacon, and sausage to enjoy during the presentation that featured different organizations speak, rather than have a guest speaker.

Johnson’s father, Sam Johnson, a retired U.S. Marine and Purple Heart recipient, who also served in the Vietnam War, delivered the greetings.

Johnson’s mother, Thomasene Johnson and Sam Johnson’s wife, gave away prizes.

Several organizations attended the event and offered their services to the veterans: Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs with One House, Tuscaloosa VA-Selma, Cahaba Mental Health, Rural Health, Legal Services, Park Place, Selma VA Outpatient Clinic.

U.S. Navy Vet Norm Trotter led the Pledge of Allegiance, U.S. Air Force vet and Benton Baptist Church Pastor Lee Tate did the prayer.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., former Selma Mayor George Evans and Dallas County Sheriff Mike Grathum all attended the event.

The breakfast was provided by Faye’s Curbside Kitchen. Americorps, Inc. and Selma YMCA served the food. Members of the Dallas County chapter Gamma Alpha Alpha Zeta of Zeta Phi  Beta Sorority, Inc. served as hostesses alongside former Selma City Councilwoman Miah Jackson.

Michael Johnson, who founded the MJ 93/90 Foundation, is a mentor at the YMCA.  He also helped serve the food.
