A longtime Dallas County Sheriff Office employee’s retirement highlighted Dallas County Commission meeting on Monday at the Dallas County Courthouse.

Willa Phillips retired after serving 25 years as Chief Matron. Phillips received plaques from the Dallas County Commission, Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum and gift from Faya Toure and Rev. Jamal Sanders.

Phillips, surrounded by family, said she enjoyed  working at the DCSO.

“The Dallas County Sheriff Office will always be in my heart, I spent half of my life there,” Phillips said.

Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum both praised Phillips for her hard work and dedication.

“Willa made a career out of  the Dallas County Sheriff Office,” Nunn said.

Jerolene Williams, Williams’ wife, also praised Phillips.

“Thank you for the compassion that you shown to the male/female inmates that you have encountered,” Jerolene Williams said.

In the public comment section, Toure discussed the conditions at the Dallas County Jail and asked the Dallas County Commission to investigate.

The Dallas County Commission declined comment, which surprised Toure.

“I thought I’d get at least one question,” Toure said.

In addition to Granthum, former Selma Mayor George Evans and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson were among the high-profile officials who attended the meeting.
