The Selma Quarterback Club awarded scholarships to five football players in Dallas County on Monday night at the YNot.

Southside running back Samuel Taylor,  Morgan Academy center Matthew Hand,  Morgan Academy tackle Andrew Morris, Morgan Academy guard Thomas Smitherman and Morgan Academy kicker Wade Mason all received $4,000 scholarships from the Selma QB Club.

Taylor received the J. Harmon Carter Scholarship. Mason earned the “Big” Fred Davis II  Scholarship. Hand received the Larry D. Stripplin Jr. Scholarship. Smitherman landed the W. Forrest Hatfield Scholarship. Morris earned the Catesby ap C. Jones Scholarship.

The scholarship committee consists of  Gus Colvin Jr., Ralph Brooks, Randall Miller, Leonard Ingram, Lee Calame and John  Porter.

Colvin, who chairs the Scholarship committee, praised the committee for their hard work in picking five outstanding nominees.

Former Dallas County High and NFL veteran Michael Johnson was the guest speaker in the final Selma QB Club meeting of the year.

All of the recipients appreciated the Selma QB Club for awarding them the scholarships.

“I’m excited to receive a scholarship from the Selma QB Club,” Morris said. “It helps out our parents with college.”

Added Smitherman: “I’m grateful and honored to get a scholarship from the Selma QB Club.”

Taylor, who has rushed for over 1,200 yards for Southside (9-1), said he’s grateful for the recognition.

“I’m happy for this opportunity,” Taylor said. “I’ve been working real hard to get to college. I’ve got an opportunity to attend college.”

Mason and Hand said they are honored to become the latest Morgan Academy players to get honored by the Selma QB Club.

“I’m very proud to get a Scholarship from the Selma QB Club,” Mason said. “It’s a privilege to get honored from a great organization.”

Added Hand: “I feel honored that the Selma QB Club gave me a scholarship. I appreciate it.”

Selma QB Club captain Bob Frazer said over $31,000 was raised over the year and praised the club membership for helping the kids.

“We have a strong club, we exist to create fellowship for football fans with a greater purpose to fund a lasting impact on the educational future of our scholarship recipients,” Frazer said.
