Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools teamed up to officially start the statewide parenting month on Thursday at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library. It’s part of the I CARE Character Curriculum.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. read a proclamation to officially declare Parenting month in the city.

Superintendents Dr. Avis Williams of Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools’ Hattie Shelton both acknowledged that parents start the foundation for learning to their children.

“We know that parents are their children’s first teachers,” Williams said. “We need parents in their children’s lives.”

Shelton said parents are always crucial in a child’s learning.

Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, Dallas County Commissioners Vivian Rogers and Curtis Williams also attended the event.

Nunn agreed with Perkins, Shelton and Williams, saying that parents are the starting point for their children’s education.

The ICARE Character Curriculum is run by Cynthia Perkins, Selma City Schools Parent Engagement facilitator and wife of Mayor Perkins.

The ICARE Character Curriculum’s purpose is to build good character in the community, homes and school districts.

The program includes “I Care” Positive Parenting Character Curriculum for parental involvement, character development and community involvement as well as grade level character traits.

Other teachers in the SCS and Dallas County school system were also present at the event.
