The Ad Valorem tax and city Mask Ordinance will be the biggest items discussed at the Selma City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Chamber.

City Council President Billy Young  said the council will vote on taking the first steps to begin the process of allowing Dallas County to take over the City’s collection of ad valorem (property) tax.

“If it passes the County will start collecting ad valorem tax in October of 2022,” Young said.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. introduced a mask ordinance that will last until November 1.

The 0106-2021 ordinance requires Selma residents to wear face coverings or masks in public during the COVID-19 public health emergency and recovery.

Young said that the council will vote on the ordinance.

At a city council meeting last month, Perkins emphasized the importance of wearing masks because the COVID numbers in Dallas County and Selma are rising.

The ordinance, if approved, requires face coverings or masks at all times by people over the age of six and who can medically tolerate doing so in public.

The proposed ordinance also states that people working alone in separate office spaces or in non-public workplaces with more than adequate social distancing area, based on the size of and number of people in the space (indoors or outdoors) don’t need to wear a face covering or mask at all times.

People must be prepared to wear a face covering or mask when interacting with others in groups of 10 or more or in groups of any size where social distancing of more than six feet cannot be consistently maintained.

Face coverings or masks are not required to be worn over the face during individual outdoor exercise, but must be worn when encountering and interacting with groups of other people in a park or other public place.

Children two and under are not required to wear masks.

Other items that will be discussed at the city council meeting, include  the purchase of electronic equipment for the Cemetery Department; purchase of a vehicle for the Recreation Department; applying for a grant with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management Boating Infrastructure Grant Program; and approval of a consultant to survey a dirt pit.
