The Valley Grande City Council finalized plans for its Fourth of July event at a Council meeting on Monday.

The entire Council was present: Mayor Wayne Labbe and council members Kay Davidson, Sara Day, Bruce Hughes, Jane Harris and Robbie Rose, and City Clerk/Treasurer Kim Harris.

Day said that the company doing the Fireworks show will arrive the morning of July 3 to get ready for the 9 p.m. show at Valley Grande City Park.

Day also said that George Henry will begin advertising the show at no charge to the city. She’s been adverstising the show on Social Media.

Labbe said that he’s glad to see another event take place in the city. Valley Grande held an Easter Egg hunt in April and plans to do a Fall Festival.

In other council news:

Day said that she’s ordered the Park Benches and they should arrive in 12 weeks. At the previous council meeting, Day presented two different prices for six benches that would cost over $3,000. Day worked with Kim Harris on the purchase.

Labbe said that his grandson will assemble the park benches.

– Jane Harris discussed the city getting broadband service. Harris said the idea came from Selma Times-Journal Vice-President Jay Davis, a Valley Grande resident. Harris said that Alabama Power and Tombigee are on board.

Labbe recommended Jane Harris to speak with Aubrey Carter of Alabama Power about the broadband. Carter appeared at the June 7 Council meeting and said he’d be willing to help the city.

Jane Harris also said that she’d look into contacting Gov. Kay Ivey about possible grants for broadband.

The next Valley Grande City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 6 at 6 p.m. at Valley Grande City Hall. Since the Fourth of July falls on Sunday, the national holiday is observed Monday.
