LIFT Ministries, Selma AIR and Soirees of Design teamed up to recognize American Heart Awareness Month at a bunch last weekend at Soirees LLC.

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner Courtney Carter, Selma Cardiologist Dr. Steven L. Allyn and Dallas County Commissioner Vivian Rogers all spoke at the event that brought awareness to heart disease.

Dr. Allyn spoke about warning signs of heart attacks and strokes.

“Heart attacks and strokes are what people worry about the most,” Dr. Allyn said. “Heart attack is called the silent killer for a reason. High blood pressure lead to heart attacks.”

Dr. Allyn offered solutions to handle obesity, which included adopting a healthier lifestyle.

“Cut back on fried foods and carbohydrates, eat grilled food, vegetables and fruits,” Dr. Allyn said. “Walk 30 minutes a day.”

Rogers, who was elected Commissioner last year, discussed surviving a heart attack 10 years ago in Montgomery. The mother of three gave recommendations to avoid heart disease.

“Relieve stress, exercise and trust God,” Rogers said. “I learned how to take care of myself.”

Carter said she survived heart disease and said the event was a learning experience.

LIFT Ministires CEO Latanglia Williams said the subject needed to get addressed.

“Bringing awareness to heart disease is very important and the brunch was something positive for the community,” Williams said.

Guests were treated to a delectable spread of chicken tenders, grits, fish, waffles and fruits and door prizes.
