Though Thanksgiving has not yet come and gone, On the Go Painting’s Courtney Nelson is asking the community to think about Selma’s children as the Christmas holidays get closer.

Nelson is seeking the help of local churches and business to provide drop off locations for a Christmas Toy drive.

“I need volunteers,” said she said. “I’m really seeking the community’s support on this. It’s a way for us to give back.”

Nelson said 2020 has been a particularly difficult year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic with many juggling the loss of a job or reduced hours and homeschooling their children.

“It’s been a tough year,” she said. “I personally know families that have been struggling and kids that will be effected this Christmas. Hopefully, this will take some of that stress off of those families.”

Though she has yet to establish drop-off locations, anyone who does not have a location to offer may make a toy donation directly to her.

Nelson said toys for children of all ages will be accepted.

“Educational toys would be especially appreciated with so many children being home-schooled,” said Nelson. “It doesn’t have to be big. You can even just bring pens, pencils and crayons if you’re unsure.”

All toys collected between now and the pick-up date, Saturday, Dec. 5 will be distributed the same day from 2 – 6 p.m. at 2812 Citizen’s Pkwy.
