It’s once again time for First Saturday Selma, the time of the month where local business and non-profit organizations come together and celebrate the arts across the Queen City.

This Saturday, The Selma Art Guild will host a “Joy Celebration” from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. featuring boxed lunches, art demonstrations and live music, all made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts and Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) the latter of which was written by Selma Art Guild member Karen Weir.

Selma Art Guild Co-President and Publicity Coordinator Jo Taylor will lead a Pottery Wheel Demonstration while Pam Arban demonstrates how she crafts her ceramic angels.

In addition to the pottery demonstrations, attendees can also learn about quilting from Black Belt Benefit Group (BBG) Executive Director Devon Gray and Gina Clements who’ll be discussing BBG’s “Quarantine Quilt” project.

Gray said Selma’s monthly celebration of the arts is more important than ever during the time of COVID-19 because the arts connect and inspire us.

“Whenever we are engaged in the arts, it allows us to connect with something bigger than ourselves,” said Gray.

Mac Spencer is the Selma Art Guild’s featured musician this month.

Taylor said Spencer is an accomplished musician who’ll perform both classical arrangements and original compositions on his guitar.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Taylor. “It’s going to be a really pretty weekend so this is a good, safe way to get out during COVID-19.”

Other First Saturday Selma events include: cookies by Lorraine Richie, of Lorraine’s Bake Shop at Gallery 905, a pumpkin arrangement workshop hosted by Ann Murray and Shannon Watts at Look at 118 Lauderdale St., new fall arrivals and prmotions at the Sturdivant Hall Gift Shop and a BBQ Cookout hosted by the Coffee Shoppe beginning at 10 a.m.
