SCS School Board finish hearings, approve budget for FY 2020-2021

Selma City Schools (SCS) held its second and final budget hearing for the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year Tuesday evening preceding the district’s September Board Meeting, during which the aforementioned budget was approved.

The 2020-2021 Fiscal Year begins next month, Oct 1, and will conclude Sep 30, 2021.

According to the SCS Proposed Budget, drafted by SCS Chief School Financial Officer (CSFO) Grindal Harris, the total beginning balance for SCS is $14,028,347.93 with $40,546.05 allocated for capital projects and $11,487,801.88 allocated for debt services leaving $2.5 million left for the general fund.
The budget shows an end balance of $14,029,527.65.

The budget shows $35,628,490.41 in revenues and $35,623,310.68 in expenditures for SCS.

Revenue shown in the budget are broken down into three categories: state, federal and local.

The budget shows $19,256,068.00 in state revenues, $8,477,521.81 in federal revenues and $5,227,880.00 in local revenues.

$2,394,590.41 of the total revenues coming fro other financing services.

SCS’s expenditures are broken down into seven categories: Instructional services, instructing support services, auxiliary services, operations and maintenance, general administration, debt service and “other”.

Instructional services accounts for 50 percent of expenditures, instructional support services accounts for 17 percent of the budget, auxiliary services accounts for 10 percent of the budget , operations and maintenance accounts for nine percent of the budget, general administration accounts for 7 percent of the budget, debt service accounts for four percent of the budget and “other” accounts for three percent of the budget.

SCS Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams thanked Harris for her efforts in drafting the budget calling her “super smart” and “intuitive”.

“I appreciate your dedication to diligence and detail,” she said.
