“LEO THE LION” died Saturday, August 22, 2020 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born in Selma, to the late Charles Walker  and Virginia Owens-Woods. Adopted father Wilbur Head. He was predeceased by one sister Mildred Walker Kimball and two brothers Fredrick Douglass Walker and Hannon Bristol Walker. Mr. Walker was very active during the Civil Rights Movement. In the late 60’s he was the first black radio host at Selma radio station WAMA-AM (WAMA IN BAMA). In 1977 he filed a lawsuit against the City of Selma for discrimination, acting as his own attorney and WON! He was recognized by BP Oil and later that year his story was published in New York Times. Charles is survived by his companion Brenda Smith; Sons: Bruce (Linda) Holmes, Sr. and Ty Amin (Tanisha) Nasim, Richard Bowie, Michael Cree and Robert Cree, Kaleem Muhammad; Daughters: Charlette Cree and Kristie Cree; Sister: Ruth Walker, Brother: Willie Walker; Grandchildren: Jermaine (Jessica) Bruce Jr., Brittany, Jazzmyne, Brian, Breanna Jai, William Grant II, Khadijah and Tenelle Cord, Durelle and Zahir Ford, David Nelson Jr., Michael Nelson. Great Grandchildren: Mirah, Avery Faith, Ava Marie and Sage.
