A woman showed up Tuesday at the Dallas County Courthouse with a grenade, forcing a temporary evacuation of the building.

According to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson, the female had a grenade in her car. Jackson also said the grenade belonged to her deceased husband, who served in the military and she wanted to turn it in. She told Dallas County Sheriff Deputies the grenade was in her car, forcing the building to evacuated and roped off.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) bomb team arrived to the courthouse to handle the crisis. The Selma Fire Department also was on the scene.

Jackson said it was a training grenade and the powder ran out a long time ago. Courthouse re-opened later Tuesday afternoon, a few hours before closing.

“The powder had been emptied out a long time ago, the grenade was harmless,” Jackson said. “She kept the grenade in her house for a long time. The bomb team did a great job.”
