A former member of the Perry County Commission was charged with first-degree attempted rape and sexual assault.

Donald Nichols, 66, was arrested at his home in Perry County Wednesday for sexual assault during a fishing trip in Dallas County last weekend, according to Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum.

Granthum said Nichols made sexual advances toward the woman in her 20’s and she rejected him. Granthum added that Nichols tried forcing himself on her to comply. After grabbing her car keys, Nichols made another sexual advance and offered to give her keys back. The female tricked Nichols and grabbed her keys.

Once they returned back on land, Granthum said the woman contacted the Selma Police Department (SPD). The Dallas County Sheriff Office arrested Nichols on Wednesday.

Granthum and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson both said Nichols was released after posting $75,000 bond.

Nichols is a member of the Perry County Board of Education and oversees schools for the school system.
