The Bridge Crossing Jubilee held an event to honor celebrate the 55^th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 on Thursday.

Over 20 cars filled with community members, elected officials, and candidates in municipal races participated in the HONK 4 Voting Rights Caravan.  The 90-minute rally began at the Dallas County Courthouse and traveled through the neighborhoods to distribute voting rights information that included necessary IDs required for voting and online resources for digital registration. The caravan ended at Memorial Park at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee Principal Coordinator and HONK 4 Voting Rights Caravan lead organizer Drew Glover said he was pleased with the event.

“The Honk 4 Voting Rights Caravan was an amazing success,” Glover said. “With a mixture of community members, currently elected officials, and candidates seeking office, it was a great opportunity to remind residents of Selma about the deadline for voter registration and to participate in democracy.

“It was a beautiful way to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.  It was powerful to see so many people involved and passionate about voting rights. I encourage everyone to make sure they are registered to vote so they can ensure their voice heard. As Rep. John Lewis said, ‘The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool in our democracy, and we must use it. If we fail to use it, we will lose it.’
