Carl Gilbert “Gil” Allen, Sr.

Carl Gilbert “Gil” Allen, Sr., age 86, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020. He was born June 13, 1934, in Hanson, Massachusetts to Arnold Allen and Frances Whiting Allen.

He joined the US Air Force in 1954, completed Jet Pilot School at Laredo AFB in 1955, and was then stationed in Yuma, Arizona, Tampa, Florida, and Anchorage, Alaska, before being assigned to Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama. He did one tour of duty in Korea during this assignment, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1977. After retiring from the USAF, he became a Realtor/appraiser. He was a jack of all trades and mastered them all: woodworking, clockmaking, beekeeping, gardening, and more than anything, playing and singing music. He loved golf and dove shoots. He collected clocks, guns, and tractors, among many other things. He loved his friends, especially his Mavericks Sunday School class and the Downtowner Coffee Group.

He is survived by his wife, Candice Henderson Allen, his children, Donna Allen Brown, Dana Allen, Linda Allen Hogue (Joey), Jack Allen, Brenda Allen Holder (Mark), Carl Gilbert Allen, Jr. (Gina), and Andrew Allen (Courtney), his grandchildren, Bo Byrd, Mistie Caver, Loren Morrow, Erica Messmer, Joe Hogue, Sam Hogue, Ben Hogue, Joshua Brown, Mara Sheehan, Chelsea Owens, Brianna LeMaster, Sara Hogue, Jesse Hogue, Gilbert Allen, Ava Allen, and Reese Allen, and great-grandchildren, Rick Byrd, Allen Byrd, Erin Odom, Paulina Roughton, Emily Morrow, Ally Odom, Oliver Brown, and Elizabeth Allen Hogue.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at First Baptist Church of Selma, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Jerry Light officiating.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

A private burial will be held Thursday, July 30, 2020, at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.

Pallbearers are Dana Allen, Jack Allen, Carl Allen, Andrew Allen, Mark Holder, and Joshua Brown.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Mavericks Sunday School Class and the Downtowner Coffee Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made either to First Baptist Church of Selma or Wannabe Rescued.

Final care and arrangements have been entrusted to Selma Funeral Home.
