Art Camp in the Queen City will look a bit different in 2020.
The Art Camp is a long-standing tradition in Selma, taking place each summer in the Dallas Academy Building until 2018 when it was relocated to local renowned artist Charlie “Tin Man” Lucas’ studio at 9 Lauderdale St. due to a fire at Dallas Academy.
This year, the camp makes another change brought about by COVID-19.
Rather than offer the traditional summer camp, Candi Duncan and the rest of the Art Camp Staff have put together Art Project Boxes funded by the Alabama State Council of the Arts.
Each summer during the Art Camp, participants are able to interact with several different mediums, including paint, pottery and sculpture .
Duncan said the project boxes reflect the artistic exploration that usually takes place at the camp and include at least 10 projects.
Duncan mentioned her disappointment about this year’s lack of a traditional Art Camp.
“It’s disappointing,” she said. “We’re going to miss everybody, but we’ll be back next year.”
The art project boxes are available for $50 and can be picked up at Lucas’ studio at 9 Lauderdale St. on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s from 9 a.m. – noon.
