Selma High took a unique approach to its graduation ceremonies.

Under the escort of the Selma Police Department, 200 seniors drove from Memorial Stadium, proceeded down Dallas Avenue to Broad Street, turned right on First Avenue to Franklin Street.

Graduates and car passengers were directed to the front of Selma High School where students exited their vehicles, one at a time, walked across the stage and received their diplomas. 

Selma class Valedictorian Renari Wells, who plans to attend Auburn, said she was thrilled that the school pulled off a ceremony.

“We couldn’t do the ceremony that we all wanted, but I’m grateful we got something,” Wells said.

Selma class Salutatorian Akerriyana Golson, who will attend Wallace Community College-Selma, said she was glad that Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams and Pritchett pulled off the event.

“It means a lot being the salutatorian of my class,” Golson said. “I’m grateful for the ceremony because it’s better than nothing. I’m thankful that the school thought of us to make it happen.”

Za’Miyah White, a top five senior, will attend WCCS, said she’s glad to end her high school career on a good note.

“I’m grateful that the school pulled this off because high school graduation is something you’ll only experience once in your life,” White said. “I’m just happy to graduate and finish in the top five. It’s all a blessing in disguise.”
