Northside Baptist Church and Vasser’s Mini-Mart held a free food giveaway on Thursday at Vasser’s Mini Mart.

Free meals were given away to the first 100 people who showed up. They were also given copies of The Lord’s Prayer.

“We want to give back to the community,” Northside Baptist member Kathy Smith said. “The community has blessed us and we want to bless them. We want to spread the word of God.”

Missy Calvert, who owns Vasser’s Mini-Mart, with her husband, Jamie Calvert, said the gesture was a way of giving back to Selma and Dallas County.

“The community has always supported us and we want to give back that support to the community,” Calvert said.

Calvert’s father, Northside Baptist member Gene Hisel, said local residents need assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The coronavirus has put some people in Dallas County in an inconvenience,” Hisel said. “We want to make it easier for them.”
