United Way of Selma-Dallas County Executive Director Jeff Cothran announced that the organization’s board of directors have allocated another $5,000 for the Selma Area Food Bank (SAFB) from the United Way’s COVID-19 relief fund.
Cothran said the additional funds will be beneficial to the SAFB as the demand for their services continues to climb during the new Coronavirus outbreak.
Cothran pointed out that the need can be seen by looking at the number of people calling the United Way’s 2-1-1 information hotline, which has increased 300 percent since the outbreak.
According to Cothran, the United Way has received over $21,000 for the local COVID-19 relief fund, a portion of it from local businesses, churches and civic groups here in Selma.
Cothran cited Barrett Road United Methodist Church, Alabama Power, Jack’s, the Selma Rotary Club and Cougar Oil as contributors to the fund.
“We’re really blessed to receive all these contributions from outside sources,” said Cothran.
Cothran expressed his gratitude for Selma’s response to the ongoing crisis, but added he wasn’t surprised at everyone’s generosity.
“I don’t mean to sound like I’m taking everyone for granted but, but I knew this community would respond,” said Cothran. “Selma will always show up when there’s a need.”
