Alabama high schools are gearing up for graduation ceremonies across the state following Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s recent state health order that loosened some COVID-19-related restrictions on businesses, gatherings and more.

Locally, however, the area’s public school systems have not finalized plans for graduation ceremonies.

Dallas County Schools Superintendent Hattie Shelton said in an email that an announcement would be made once the school system had decided on a date for graduations at Dallas County High School, Keith Middle-High School and Southside High School.

Similarly, Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams said in an email to parents and students this week, as well as in her weekly “Class Notes” column, that an announcement on a graduation date for Selma High School could be expected in the coming days.

The area’s two private schools, Morgan Academy and Meadowview Christian Academy, are scheduled to host graduation ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. MCS’ high school graduation will be held at the football stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Both Morgan Academy and MCS will both have limited seating. At Morgan Academy, school officials said that graduates’ parents are allowed and they can invite eight additional guests to attend the ceremony.

MCS headmaster Bob Taylor said their ceremony will also have limited seating for their families. The seniors will be given 15 tickets each. The families will be on the football field and senior class in the bleachers. MCS is also painting boxes on the field for their families in front of the bleachers to practice social distancing.
