Leadership Selma-Dallas County Youth Program is once again seeking applicants for the upcoming school year.
Dallas County Extension Coordinator Callie Nelson said the Youth Leadership Program, now in its 23rd year, is seeking 24 students to be in next year’s class.
According to Nelson, the program has seen more than 400 graduates all of whom have learned and developed not only leadership skills, such as communication and decision-making, but also develop life skills such as how to prepare for an interview, financial literacy and how to work with people from a diversity of backgrounds.
Nelson said that one of the most important things participants walk away from the program with is an increased knowledge of the Selma and Dallas County community.
Nelson said the upcoming class the participants will attend a two-day retreat to get to know each other; tour various industries such as International Paper and Honda Locks to learn about economic development and manufacturing in Dallas County; tour the hospital and learn about health care in the area and career opportunities here at home; and meet with the mayor, city council members, the probate judge and county commissioners to learn about local government.
This year as in past years, Nelson is looking for young people who will be high school juniors or seniors in the fall, those who want to develop the skills needed to lead and are ready to step into leadership positions.
The year-long program will bring together students from all of our county’s high schools, public and private.
“The opportunity for the participants to meet and learn with students from the different schools has been valuable and is rated as one of the things they like most about the program,” said Nelson.
To apply, contact Nelson at nelsoc@aces.edu or the Chamber of Commerce at info@selmaalabama.com and request an application.
The deadline for submitting applications has been extended until Friday, May 21.
