Averee Adams wasn’t ready to end her athletic career at Morgan Academy.

When Gov. Kay Ivey ordered the closing of schools statewide K-12 on March 13 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it all but ended her hopes of running track one more time at Morgan Academy.

Adams was a member of The Selma Times-Journal All Dallas County girls’ basketball team and made the AISA All-Star Basketball game. Adams also played softball for the Lady Senators and was an AISA All-Star cheerleader.

“Basketball is my favorite sport because I like how aggressive it is,” Adams said. “I’m competitive.”

But the biggest thing Adams misses is the daily grind of school and practices when classes are over.

“It’s frustrating, I miss my friends and seeing them everyday,” Adams said. “I miss my friends and playing sports.”

Adams said she made the transition from classes to online learning.

“The biggest adjustment is doing my work on the computer and not having my teachers help me, I have to do it myself,” Adams said.

Adams said she will always cherish the countless highlights during her stint at Morgan Academy. She will graduate with honors, posting a 3.5 GPA and 22 ACT score.

“I have a lot of memories of Morgan Academy, I hate to see it end this way,” Adams said. 

The next step for Adams is attending the University of Alabama in the fall. Adams is undecided on a major, but looking forward to the next stage of her life at the Capstone in Tuscaloosa.
