A large fire near LL Anderson and Lawrence Street earlier Tuesday caused damage to multiple Alabama Power utility poles and wire, according to Aubrey Carter of Alabama Power Company.

The fire destroyed four abandoned properties Tuesday morning at the 1400 block of LL Anderson Avenue and the 1400 block of Lawrence Street.

Carter said 1,709 Alabama Power customers were left without power in the downtown Selma area.

“Alabama Power crews responded and remain onsite working to make repairs,” Carter said.  “We estimate that power will be restored by noon today.”

The Selma Fire Department (SFD) was also on the scene to put out the fire.

Selma Fire Chief Chris Graham said four abandoned houses were destroyed. Graham also said there were no injuries.

Graham said the fire started around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning when firefighters were called to the scene, going from one roof all the way to the two-story structure. He said the SFD put out the fire around 5 a.m.

“By the time we got here, the fire was fully evolved,” Graham said. “It took us until 5 a.m. to get the fire under control.”

Selma City Councilman John Leashore said he heard about the fire in his Ward 6 District. Leashore said he’d look into the matter.
