South Alabama considers Jeremy Lee one of its top baseball signees.

Lee signed a national letter of intent to play for the Jaguars during the NCAA Fall Signing Period in November.

Jaguars head baseball coach Mark Calvi is impressed with the skillset of Lee, who plays pitcher and infielder for Morgan Academy.

“Jeremy is a very good athlete with an outstanding arm,” Calvi said. “He really came on last spring. He is up to 91-92 miles per hour with a really good slider. We feel very fortunate to have gotten Jeremy. It was the right fit, and he should see significant time as a freshman.”

Lee said the Jaguars made him feel at home after visiting the Division I campus based in Mobile.

“That was my number one goal in picking a college,” Lee said. “I wanted to go where I was wanted. I felt like that at South Alabama.”

Lee will bring an impressive resume to the Jaguars’ traditionally strong baseball program. As a junior last year, Lee was named  AISA Pitcher of the Year and also earned First-Team All-State honors from the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He had a 1.05 ERA, batted .486 with seven homers.

And Lee’s senior season got off to a fast start, throwing a no-hitter two weeks after basketball season ended.

Lee’s momentum was halted when the AISA suspended the spring sports season until April 17 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You kind of work hard your whole life expecting your senior year to be you best year yet and now I don’t get that chance,” Lee said. “I know this is bigger than baseball, but it still hurts.”

Morgan Academy baseball coach Stephen Clements praised the Jaguars’ signing of Lee.

“South Alabama has a great program with a great staff that just got a great baseball player but an even better young man,” Clements said.

Lee’s versatility earned him All-state honors in basketball, football and baseball by the ASWA.

At point guard, Lee averaged 21 points and four steals a game.

Lee also earned Selma Times-Journal All Dallas County honors in all three sports. At quarterback, Lee earned The Selma Times-Journal’s football player of the year in 2018.

“He worked hard on his all around game in the offseason,” Senators basketball coach Luke Hutcheson said. “We all knew Jeremy was a great outside shooter, but he quickened his release, became a force driving the ball to the rim and played great on ball defense for us this season.”

Thacker thanked Lee for his one season playing quarterback and punter at Morgan Academy.

“Jeremy is a great young man with a bright future,” Thacker said.
