Selma City Schools (SCS) recently announced its advancement to Tier 1 of the Alabama Performance Excellence (APEX) Awards Program.

The school system was recognized at the APEX Program Annual Conference held last week in Tuscaloosa.

Tier 1, Commitment to Performance Excellence, is for organizations that have made a serious commitment to use and implement performance excellence concepts and principals.

SCS demonstrated such a commitment starting with the 2019-2020 theme of “One Team. One Voice: Committed to Excellence”.

Organizations seeking Tier 1 recognition are required to commit a self-assessment followed by a site visit from the awards committee which SCS completed last fall.

“It’s an honor to have progressed to Tier 1 of the Alabama Performance Excellence Program,” said SCS Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams. “Team Selma has worked tirelessly pursuing excellence across the district. We are committed to continuing our path towards excellence and advancing to Tier 1 within this program demonstrates that we are still on the right path.”

ALPEx, modeled after the Malcolm Balrige National Quality Award, honors organizations whose recent innovations increased productivity and quality within the organization.

The improvement efforts include formal techniques or practices that are capable of being shared with other organizations with the expectation they will be replicated and contribute to state and national productivity and quality improvement.

The APEX award is administered by the APEX program through its affiliation with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) School of Health Profession, Collat School of Business and School of Engineering.

The purpose of the program is to help organizations enhance their performance and find ways to use University research and educational resources to stimulate economic development within the state.
